The Solaris Quartet recently recorded an album of new music by composer Matthew Slater.  The quartet spent two days at the idyllic Potton Hall in Suffolk recording the album.  The album is to be released in the US sometime later this year.  Slater says, “Working with Solaris is such a joy.  Not only are they fantastic musicians they contribute creatively to the whole process.  I very much look forward to working with the quartet again.”

A collection of ancient melodies gathered by G.I. Gurdjieff in the early part of the 20th Century during his travels to the Middle and Far East. Stunning performances couple with breathtakingly profound music.

Last night saw a memorial performance of the music of BBC World Service broadcaster, writer and pedagog Geoffrey Stern.  Geoffrey and the quartet worked together on recording Geoffrey’s string quartet music shortly before he was tragically struck down with a heart attack in 2005.  Through his family, Geoffrey’s music lives on.  The Shaw Library in the London School of Economics was a fitting venue for a memorial concert with Geoffrey being senior lecturer at the LSE for many years.

The Solaris Quartet performed a mixed programme of Stern, Vaughan Williams and works by two young finalists in the Classic FM and Imperial War Museum composers competition ‘In Memoriam‘, for which The Solaris Quartet judged and recorded the winning entries.  Duncan Ward and Ben Cox (winner), both attended last night’s concert to support the event.  Solaris also performed a selection from their debut album The Mosaic Nomad – The Music of G.I. Gurdjieff and Thomas de Hartmann, released on Blue Jelly Records later this month.

The evening was a great success with the quartet receiving many comments of praise and congratulations.  Above all, Geoffrey was remembered in the best way possible, through his music.
